The lonely man by the roadside…..

The lonely man by the roadside…..

Along the busy and noisy street, at noon
Where the windblown dust creates patterns
Like the lazy strokes in an artist’s canvas-
I walk alone –only to stop to see a shadow-so peculiar!
I glance up to see him stride-lonely too.

From shop to shop he moves begging-
Long arms extended for a penny or two.
Tangled mass of hair with dirt and face blank
Frail body clad in clothes so torn
As if by gunshots of life
Left ankle masked in shreds of rags
To hide a wound - fathomless may be!
A bundle of cloth clutched close to chest-
Remnants of his bygone glory-his treasure!

Children in cars gaze at him-curious not afraid!
Parents roll up the windows
For them a hideous creature is on prowl!
He knocks on windows-knuckles bruised
Then turns with a wry smile and a distant look
But these dreary chores make his day!

I take a stroll again at night-
When the air is cool and the streets empty-
My eyes search for him-curious
Like the children in cars!
In the solitude of a tiled shop step he sleeps
Holding the bundle as if he’ll never let go-
Does he ever have dreams in those hours of oblivion!
Of his mother, father or a lover?
To light up his face with a smile!

A tinge of solicitude is all he needs
But it needs a genuine heart-in this race of life
To act so for a fellow being!
Bound in the shackles of ethics-ashamed I am
By the inability-to bring down human misery!
The silence of night becomes deafening-
By echoes of his heartbroken cry!
Selfish I move-for my journey has to go on!
And in the the pages of my mind-
The lonely man by the roadside is an indelible imprint!

The thoughts of a Camellia plant….

A tender breeze fondled me
It made my leaves dance to a slow tune..
The day so bright and the sun, warm
And my heart brims with joy so profound!

By the small pond where white lilies bloom
I stand adorned with white flowers and tiny buds
Amidst leaves whose glossy sheen
Accentuated by the sun’s golden rays

I see the roses turn their heads in envy
The azaleas kiss me with their tender shoots
A fragrant wave from the jasmine – so pure
And enamoured- the zephyr lilies and orchids!

Memories of those days of waiting slowly unfurl
Days of thunder and rain and cold
Days of scorching heat and dry winds
Doomed by doubts of survival in a land so alien!

But there are fireflies even in darkness
And love and care is same even in far-off corners
My pots were changed and soil made fresh
In an ambience so cool and shady

A touch – so caring as to make me strong
A whisper- Oh Camellia when will you flower?
A look – an unbreakable thread of hope
Made me long for a miracle to happen

And on one of those mild winter days
When the fresh droplets from big grey clouds
Made the earth spread a fragrance so pristine
I felt my whole body metamorphose..

At the tips and in between branches
Surfaced tiny blossoms in pale green!
Days passed and my wait continued with trepidation-
At last to see them bloom to flowers so pure, in white!

I saw those faces of elation and surprise
And contented smile- a reward so inimitable
And I felt like the crowned princess
In that beautiful land that once was so bizarre!

The still water in the pond makes my reflection perfect
And I hear whispers- ‘Camellia you’re beautiful!’
As I revel in the newfound glory, I wonder-
Will this world ever be beautiful devoid of man’s love and care!
